How we research and score water filters

We'd rather tell you exactly how our recommendations are made than imply something they aren't. Here's the process behind every guide, review and calculator on Home Water Filter Guide.

What we do (and don't do)

Home Water Filter Guide is a research-based buyer's guide. We don't run a lab, we don't plumb systems into test rigs, and our reviews are not hands-on tests. Instead, for every system we:

  • Start from the manufacturer's spec sheet: flow rate, media capacity, media type, certification claims, warranty terms.
  • Verify certifications against NSF and WQA listings where possible, and distinguish whole-system certification from component-level marks and maker claims — the distinction matters enormously in this category.
  • Cross-check with independent reviews from publications that do test, and note where their results differ from the marketing claims.
  • Read owner reports (forums, retailer reviews, support threads) for the problems that only show up after months of use: pressure drop, cartridge costs, install surprises, support response times.
  • Flag uncertainty. When a spec can't be confirmed, or sources disagree, we say so rather than guess.

Each system page lists the sources we relied on.

How the 10-point score works

Every system gets three sub-scores, each out of 10:

  • Filtration: breadth and strength of contaminant reduction, weighted by certification level — independent whole-system certification outranks component marks, which outrank unverified maker claims.
  • Flow rate: rated service flow against real household needs, with headroom for peak demand.
  • Value: typical street price against what you get, including five years of filter replacements — not just the sticker price.

The overall score is a weighted blend of the three, rounded to one decimal, plus small adjustments for warranty and support reputation. A 9+ is exceptional, 8–9 is a strong buy for the right home, and under 7.5 means real compromises.

A higher score doesn't mean it's the right system for you. A 9.0 PFAS-certified flagship is a bad buy if your water problem is iron. That's why we built the water test interpreter.

Prices

Prices are typical US street prices at the time of our last update and are shown as ranges because water filtration systems are discounted heavily and often. Always check the current price on the retailer page.
